Britney Spears Opens Up After Criticizing Halsey’s ‘Lucky’ Music Video: “That Was Not Me On My Phone”

The princess of pop Britney Spears initially lashed out at Halsey on social media a few days ago, accusing the singer of copying her 2000 single “Lucky” in a way that made her feel “harassed, violated and bullied.”

Spears criticized the Gia Coppola-directed video for Halsey’s new single, stating it portrayed her as a “superficial pop star.”

However, Spears quickly deleted her post and replaced it with a new message, claiming the previous post was not from her. “Fake news !!! That was not me on my phone !!! I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!” she wrote.

Halsey responded warmly, quote-tweeting Spears’ new post with, “And I love Britney!!!! I always have and always will ? you were the first person who ever made me realize what it means to feel inspired. And you continue to inspire me every day.”

The controversy arose as Halsey released her new song and video for “Lucky” earlier today. In the weeks leading up to the release, Halsey assured fans that she had obtained Spears’ approval to reference the original song. She responded to a fan on social media, “Yes, of course! I wouldn’t even dream of doing it without her blessing!”

Spears’ initial outburst was driven by her feeling misrepresented in the video, which draws from the original “Lucky” storyline depicting the complexities of being a pop star. The video highlights the duality of a young girl idolizing Halsey, who is privately struggling with her health and personal life.

Halsey’s video and song are part of her upcoming fifth studio album, following her 2021 release, “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.”
