Carrie Underwood Feels ‘American Idol’ Judging Duty Is Like A Homecoming

Carrie Underwood is all set to return to American Idol, but this time not as a competitor. She is going to be a judge on the upcoming season of the iconic singing competition, taking over for Katy Perry. The season four winner shared in her excitement and found her new role nostalgic.

Carrie talked about her feelings on a return to the show where she got a leg up on Good Morning America on Friday. “It feels like home,” she said. “There are so many people that still work on the show that were there when I was a contestant, and I feel like, being on both sides of the coin, I’ll be able to offer some insight and help and a different viewpoint hopefully.”

Carrie Underwood Planning to Return to American Idol

Carrie, who’ll sit alongside last season’s returning judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, looked back at the kind of judge she hopes to be. Known for nothing but keeping it real, she admitted: “I have a big problem. I can’t lie, I just can’t, you can tell. I feel like I’ll be very honest but hopefully, I can be very constructive and encouraging.”

When co-host Sam Champion asked what kind of judge she would be, Carrie said that she would try not to be too tough. “Oh gosh no. Just ask my kids, I feel like I’m not too (hard),” she said.

Carrie coming back is such a big deal because she will be the very first American Idol contestant to host as a judge. Her perspective as a former contestant will only add valuable knowledge and support to the very full, talented pool of want-to-be on the show.

Fans can see Carrie, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan when American Idol airs at the beginning of 2025.
