Arguably the biggest grunge icon that isn’t Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, is likely to tour in Australia sometime soon.
Triple M reporter Nui Te Koha said on air yesterday (Wednesday 25 May), “Chris Cornell is coming to play some acoustic gigs. Soundgarden tracks are in the set. Expect an announcement this week or next.”
Apparently, Australian promoters have been chasing Soundgarden for some time, setting off various rumours and conjecture, to no avail. Securing Cornell is therefore a major coup for them.
Cornell released his last solo album, Scream, in 2009, while Soundgarden of course reunited to play at the American festival Lollapalooza in 2010, and released a new best-of collection that spanned their entire career, Telephantasm, which included new song Black Rain. They also released a live album, Live on I-5, earlier this year.
Soundgarden split up in 1997 following the release of their final album Down On The Upside, their fifth since they burst on to the scene in 1988 with Ultramega OK.
The band do plan to release another studio album before the end of the year.
Since Soundgarden’s previous life, Cornell has enjoyed success in Audioslave with members of Rage Against The Machine, and of course a solo career that has seen him release three albums.
