Cold Chisel’s ‘Big Five-O’ Melbourne Show To Air This Sunday On Channel 7

Cold Chisel have shared details of the world premiere of their new concert film, The Big Five-O. The film documents the band’s sold-out performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne last October, which was part of the tour of the same name commemorating the band’s 50th anniversary. It will premiere at 8pm local time on Sunday, May 11th on Channel 7, and will also be streaming on the channel’s app 7plus simultaneously as well as on demand following the premiere.

The Big Five-O was directed by Andrew Lord, who also oversaw the brief Australian reboot of MTV Unplugged in the late 2010s with sessions from Amy Shark, Courtney Barnett and Gang Of Youths. It was produced by Paul Clarke, who also worked on the John Farnham documentary Finding The Voice and the Midnight Oil documentary The Hardest Line. “[At] 50 years old, Cold Chisel are on fire in this film,” said Clarke in a press statement shared to the band’s newsletter. “I’ve never seen audiences punching the air one moment, openly sobbing the next.”

In his own press statement, frontman Jimmy Barnes explained why the band selected the Melbourne show as the one to showcase as part of The Big Five-O. “”Every show on our tour had something special, but the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne – with 37° temperatures and an incredible audience – really brought out a blistering and joyous performance from all of us onstage,” he said. “The crowd nearly drowned us out; they sang so loud and proud. It was a show we will never forget.”

The Big Five-O tour officially concluded in January 2025 in Whitianga, a town on the north island of New Zealand. The band played 27 shows in total across both Australia and New Zealand, including a secret warm-up show in Thirroul under the moniker of The Barking Spiders. Since the tour’s conclusion, both Barnes and guitarist Ian Moss have resumed their solo careers; they are both set to tour nationally in 2025. Details of Barnes’ tour can be found here, while Moss’ can be found here.
