Danny Brown Says He’s Working On A Kid’s Book Inspired By Dr Seuss

Danny Brown is definitely working on the follow-up to his 2013 Old record, but he’s got a few other creative outlets to tinker with at the same time. In an interview with triple j yesterday, the Dip rapper revealed one of his stranger side projects — he’s working on a children’s book, with inspiration from Dr Seuss and his own 13-year-old daughter.

“I’m actually trying to write a children’s book. It’s been taking me forever to finish… It’s really about self-esteem in black girls, I guess,” he told triple j‘s Kyron Wheatley.

“You know how black women do so much — process their hair, change their eye colour — it’s really about a little girl who does all these things to herself and changes herself and she realises she’s just better off the way she is.”

He added: “It’s something for my daughter… I’ve got to finish it though, I’m trying hard. I want it to be real Dr. Seuss-y… Just real short. I don’t know why it’s taken me years to finish it — I’m real meticulous with my children books!”

“I don’t know how Dr Seuss did it. I don’t know how he wrote The Grinch, Green Eggs And Ham, and One Fish, Blue Fish — what was going on in that guy’s brain to be able to write those things?”

Asked to imagine Dr Seuss “in the time of rap”, Brown came up with a strong image. “I think I AM Dr. Seuss! I think it would be me! I’m The Grinch, I’m all his characters come to life in rap music.”

Brown also confirmed progress on his next LP has begun, telling triple jc he’s bought a house in Michigan where he can live and work. “I got a studio in my house now so I’ll just wake up, stretch, record whenever I want,” he said.

He’s once again teamed with producers Paul White and SKYWLKR, as well as working with L.A.-based producer The Alchemist.

Danny Brown has just wrapped a run of Australian festival dates and headline shows. You can hear his full interview, where he also talks about his collaboration with The Avalanches and those Speedo-clad Field Day dippers, over at triple j.
