Dave Rowntree Hails Blur’s ‘The Ballad Of Darren’ as Their Best Work

Dave Rowntree, drummer of the iconic Britpop band Blur, has declared their latest album, The Ballad Of Darren, as the best work the band has ever done. Released in 2023, this is Blur’s ninth album and marks their return to the charts after an eight-year hiatus since The Magic Whip in 2015.

In an interview with Super Deluxe Edition, Dave expressed his enthusiasm for the album, stating, “I think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done and by quite a long way.” Despite his pride in the new record, he acknowledges that many middle-aged musicians often feel the same about their latest work, admitting, “I’ll be guided by what other people think.”

Dave highlighted the album’s immediate appeal, noting, “There are certainly some great immediate songs on it.” He referenced Tom Robinson’s thoughts on making a comeback and the importance of creating songs that resonate with listeners instantly. “One of our selling points is that you can play one of our records and immediately go: ‘Oh, I like that a lot,’” Dave explained.

While it’s uncertain if Blur will reunite again after going on hiatus, Dave hinted at the possibility of future projects. He mentioned the band’s past significant performances, such as headlining the British Summer Time Festival at Hyde Park in 2009 and the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony. He said, “There’s absolutely no reason why we couldn’t consider another interesting idea if we’re all available. But there’s absolutely nothing in the diary for Blur at the moment.”
