Deftones Announce New Album ‘private music’, Drop Brooding New Single

Deftones are back in a big way. The Grammy-winning alt-metal icons have just announced their long-awaited 10th studio album, private music, arriving next month on Friday, 22nd August. And to mark the moment, they’ve dropped the moody new single dubbed ‘my mind is a mountain’ (listen below).

Featuring their signature cocktail of beauty and brutality, the new track is pure Deftones—hazy, heavy, hypnotic—and a strong taste of what’s to come from the album.

It also arrives alongside a rare and candid chat with Zane Lowe, who sat down with the band at LA’s iconic Canter’s Deli to talk about the new era, old memories, and the future of Deftones.

“I’m more interested in putting in stuff that I’m unfamiliar with and trying to be more than just the power chord,” frontman Chino Moreno said of the writing process. “I feel like we’re much more into making sound than we are writing songs. The sounds are what really inspire us.”

private music forms the follow-up to 2020’s Ohms LP. It was co-produced by the band and longtime collaborator Nick Raskulinecz (who previously helmed Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan, both fan faves). Recording sessions took place in Malibu, Joshua Tree and even Nashville, weaving the California desert into their signature dreamscape-meets-detonation sound.

Meanwhile, Deftones last visited Aussie fans in December of 2022, where they headlined Good Things festival alongside Bring Me The Horizon.

Hopefully a new album cycle means it won’t be long til we get to see them again!
