Video streaming giants YouTube may have launched the first ever YouTube Music Awards, handing out nominations to acts like Rihanna, Eminem and Atoms For Peace, but not everyone is happy about it, with Californian producer/rapper Flying Lotus saying he can’t see the point.
Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison, a.k.a. Captain Murphy, took to Twitter to slam the ceremony:
“Seems like the YouTube Music Awards are pretty much the same as the VMAs. I don’t really see the point. If it’s all about hits sure I get it but let’s be fair–YouTube award nominations clearly don’t care about cutting edge/innovation.
“They had an opportunity to shine a light on all the artists that they helped to gain notoriety just to shit on them for uber famous acts. No disrespect to the nominees yadda yadda.”
Man has a point. The YouTube Music Awards will take place on Thursday, 3rd November in New York City and will feature performances from M.I.A., Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, the Creator, Arcade Fire, Eminem, and Lady Gaga.
The ceremony will stream live, naturally, on YouTube and will be hosted by actor Jason Schwartzman, with Spike Jonze acting as creative director. Meanwhile, Flying Lotus will be hitting Australia next March as part of the recently announced lineup for Golden Plains 2014.
