Foals dropped a 12-second clip teasing their forthcoming album yesterday but now frontman Yannis Philippakis has given some more thorough insight into what to expect from the LP.
Speaking to NME, Philippakis said “This new stuff’s going to decimate venues; we’re itching to play it.”
Foals’ last record Holy Fire saw the band adopt a heavier, wilder sound but it looks as if the Brit-rockers are going to push it even further on album number four. “On [Holy Fire] I tried to consciously push the lyrics somewhere personal that was more like real life, whereas on this one I just wanted to strip the layers of myself away, have the reptilian part of my brain speak directly and not analyse or censor it,” he said.
“I wanted to tap into my inner madman and feel like I was channelling some sort of fevered creature.”
The adoption of the madman character was helped along by the fact they recorded the album at La Fabrique studios in France, just down the road from where Van Gogh chopped his ear off.
“We wanted to suck in a bit of that [Van Gogh’s] madness,” Philippakis said.
As for the songs that will be on the album, “The extremes are further apart than anything we’ve done before,” he said.
There’s What Went Down which is their “closest to a representation of how we play live.” Then there’s Mountain At My Gate which NME describes as a cross between Miami and My Number. The final song detailed is Give It All which Philippakis said, “is up there with the most beautiful things we’ve ever written.”
There’s still no release date but at least we have a little more than a 12-second video to hold onto now.
