In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind, this Friday is grunge day on Double J. Zan Rowe will get things started with a grunge Take 5 at 10am.
It’s a special Take 5 drawn from the extensive Double J and triple j archives. It’ll feature chit chat and song selections from Nevermind producer Butch Vig (Garbage), The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan and Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman, plus more.
The Desko segment runs every Friday from 11am-12pm on Double J. This week, they’re asking listeners to text in all their favourite grunge songs. Why wait? You can text in your requests to Double J now via the triple j app.
From there, it’s a feast for the ears of Nirvana nerds and grunge gurus. At midday, Double J will be playing Nirvana’s 1992 show at the Palace Theatre in Melbourne—recorded during Nirvana’s one and only Australian tour.
At 12.30pm, they’ll air the Smells Like Teen Spirit radio documentary, which centres on the titular banger and host of grunge’s other defining anthems. Then at 3pm, resident egghead Richard Kingsmill will host a special edition of The J Files, taking a deep dive into the grunge genre. He’ll spotlight all the biggest names in grunge, as well as a few unsung heroes.
If you can’t wait until Friday, tune into Double J on Thursday evening to whet your palate. At 6pm a special edition of Eleven will highlight the best Australian alternative rock bands of the grunge era. Then at 7pm, Double J will press play on the Soundgarden J Files.
