John Mayer Thinks Tame Impala’s ‘Currents’ Is As Good As Radiohead, Coldplay Classics

Currents was the record that took Tame Impala from indie favourite to mainstage festival players and while it’s received widespread critical appraisal, John Mayer felt the need to put in his two cents worth a year after its release.

Mayer joined Lady Gaga, Alex Turner, Rihanna and more declaring his love for the Aussie band on Instagram calling Currents, “the best* record of the past two or three years”.

You may wonder why he decided to include the “*” and that’s because he had to footnote his comment with, “*my opinion duh”.

Interestingly he didn’t attach that footnote to the rest of his statement which compared the record’s quality to Radiohead in 1996 (The Bends/OK Computer), Coldplay in 2003 (A Rush Of Blood To The Head) and Phoenix in 2008 (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix). Modestly, he didn’t include John Mayer in 2001 (Your Body Is A Wonderland).

The next statement he made though truly declared his love for frontman Kevin Parker with Mayer saying he’d be happy for Parker to steal his girlfriend.

“If I ever got broken up with by a girl for the guy in Tame Impala I’d be like, ‘I understand, and if you don’t mind, could you maybe bring him to a show of mine sometime?’,” he wrote.

For those of you who haven’t been vigilant in keeping up with Mayer lately, he’s playing in a band called Dead & Company with members of The Grateful Dead.
