Kate Bush Gives Rare Interview Following ‘Running Up That Hill’ Resurgence

Since her 1985 Hounds of Love single ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ has begun enjoying a massive resurgence thanks largely to its prominence in the new season of Stranger Things, the typically publicity-shy Kate Bush has given multiple public statements on her website addressing the renewed interest.

Now, the singer has given her first interview about it all, following the song reaching #1 on the UK Singles Chart some 37 years after it was released, peaking at #1 in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and more, and cracking the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 for the first time ever.

“I mean, you know, it’s such a great series, I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this,” Bush told host Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. “It’s so exciting. But it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world’s gone mad.”

She continued: “What’s really wonderful, I think, is this is a whole new audience who, in a lot of cases, have never heard of me and I love that. The thought of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it is… well, I think it’s very special.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bush discusses 80s nostalgia while also acknowledging that, despite it being “an awful time on a lot of levels for people”, she also thinks it’s an “incredibly exciting” time to be alive, pointing to advances in technology and medicine as examples of positive things going on. “There are positive things. You just have to look a bit harder to find them at the moment.”

Towards the end of the interview, Bush is asked what she spends her time doing these days, replying, “Gardening’s my thing now, I think.” You can listen to the whole interview here.
