Kendrick Lamar Unveils Powerful Cover And Title Of Forthcoming LP

Kendrick Lamar’s new album is just under two weeks away and now we have a pretty powerful cover art and album title to go with it.

The album will be titled To Pimp A Butterfly and is accompanied by an artwork, posted on Lamar’s instagram, of black men seemingly standing by an unconscious judge in front of the white house holding money and booze.

Over the weekend Lamar announced that the album would be released on 23rd March by tweeting a link to the iTunes pre-order. It appears the LP will have 16 tracks with one of those being the previously released The Blacker The Berry.

The Blacker The Berry is the most politically and socially charged track Lamar has ever released featuring lyrics like “You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture.” This fits with the nature of the album cover and the title which appears to be an appropriation of the name of Harper Lee’s 1960 novel To Kill A Mockingbird, as Consequence of Sound points out.

Lamar described the record to Rolling Stone as, “honest, fearful and unapologetic.”

“You take a black kid out of Compton and put him in the limelight, and you find answers about yourself you never knew you were searching for,” he said. “There’s some stuff in there, man. It’s a roller coaster. It builds.”

To Pimp A Butterfly is Lamar’s first record since his critically acclaimed, major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city.
