King Gizzard Nominated For Another ‘Hard Rock/Heavy Metal’ ARIA Award Following 2016 Controversy

Aussie rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been nominated for another Hard Rock/Heavy Metal ARIA Award, after their victory in the same category created controversy last year.

Picking up three nominations at today’s ARIA Awards nominations ceremony, King Gizz scored a nom in the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category for their album Murder Of The Universe, alongside other nominees Airbourne, Frenzal Rhomb, Northlane and Sleepmakeswaves.

Metalheads across the country were pretty pissed last year when King Gizzard won Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album for their record Nonagon Infinity, beating out fellow nominees like Parkway Drive, The Amity Affliction and Twelve Foot Ninja, who later responded to King Gizzard’s controversial win.

At the time, Twelve Foot Ninja guitarist Stevic MacKay told Music Feeds, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t irritated by the only band who shouldn’t have been in the category actually winning.”

Fellow heavy act King Parrot later defended King Gizzard’s win, while suggesting that heavy bands should stop whinging about not winning ARIA Awards.

King Gizzard’s latest (and jazziest) album Sketches Of Brunswick East was also nominated for Best Jazz Album at this year’s ARIAs, but didn’t end up winning the award. The band have also been nominated for Best Group and Best Australian Live Act, and the winners of those categories will be revealed when the ARIA Awards take place in Sydney on Tuesday, 28th November.
