Listen: Phoenix Return To SNL With New Tunes ‘Trying To Be Cool’ And ‘Drakkar Noir’

French dance rockers Phoenix made their second appearance on Saturday Night Live in New York over the weekend and gave us all a taste of 2 brand-new songs, Trying To Be Cool and Drakkar Noir, from their upcoming fifth studio album, Bankrupt!.

The quartet brought their charming brand of hipster rock back across the Atlantic, opening the show with Entertainment, the lead single from the album, followed by the two new tracks. While Drakkar Noir seems to take its name from a Guy Laroche fragrance, singer Thomas Mars told Billboard that Trying To Be Cool is actually about anything but being cool:

“When you’re in a rock band, you transform yourself into a hero, a kind of god-like figure. But the really great artists are more clever than that. Being cool is boring.”

Bankrupt! is the follow-up to 2009’s Grammy-winning Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Phoenix headline Coachella on 23rd April and Bankrupt! will be released in Australia on Friday, 19th April, a few days before the rest of the world hears it from Monday, 22nd April. Be sure to check out the deluxe edition, The Bankrupt! Diaries, with a staggering 71 bonus tracks.
