Blink-182 have a new album on the way. Having already released the singles ‘Blame It On My Youth’ and ‘Generational Divide’, they’ve shared another new track today entitled ‘Happy Days’. The single coincides with Blink 182 day – that is, the 182nd day of the year, July 1st.
“I want to feel happy days / All of this frustration inside of my brain / And I don’t know if I’m ready to change,” the band’s Mark Hoppus sings on the track. Musically, it’s fairly familiar territory for the trio, with melancholic verses giving way to a classically anthemic Blink chorus.
“Happy Days is a song that we got in the studio and we had this idea and kind of built it out with our friends, Tim and Sam Hollander,” said Hoppus while talking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “It’s about coming from a place of frustration and anger and saying, ‘Fuck it,’ and just saying, ‘I want to go to better times. I want to be in a better place and I’m going to leave all this nonsense behind and find my zone.’ That was done in [drummer] Mr. Travis Barker’s lab.”
The “aggressive” forthcoming Blink album is set to be released sometime this year, and is apparently “darker in theme and tone” than previous album California, according to an interview Hoppus did with NME back in March.
“If you like California to Enema Of The State then this album is more like the untitled record where we are trying to experiment more: trying to experiment more, trying different sounds, and trying to expand upon what people think Blink 182 is.”
