Madonna Strikes Back At Haters Of Her Prince Tribute: “Don’t Hang Your Shit On Me”

Madonna has hit back at the haters of her tribute to Prince, performed at the Billboard Music Awards last night in Las Vegas.

With shiny suit, purple velvet throne and sceptre in tow, Madonna sang a slow and simple rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U (written by Prince, made famous by Sinead O’Connor). She was then joined by Stevie Wonder to perform Purple Rain. They swayed along singing in unison, all the while encouraging the nearing 20,000 audience members to join in with the singalong in memory of the Purple One. And everyone did.

In an emotional overflow the arena was lit in purple light, but the performance has stirred some avid Prince fans the wrong way, with cyber backlash steadily flowing in soon after.

Questlove of the Roots (another of Princes’ actual friends) gave a moving speech at the awards just before Madonna performed. He spoke up later via Twitter in defence of Madonna’s tribute, reminding people of the realness of this loss.

Madge herself has taken note of the adverse reactions to her performance, and used Instagram and Twitter to welcome others to take to the stage and pay tribute to the Purple One, however they may choose.

She has also cemented the fact that she does not give a shit what anyone thinks, by posting another photo saying “Deal with it”, as well as a video titled “This is my “I’m not your bitch, don’t hang your shit on me” Dance.”
