MAY-A has returned with a new single, entitled ‘[Redacted]’. It marks the Sydney-born pop singer-songwriter’s first new music of 2025, and comes some 18 months after her second EP, 2023’s Analysis Paralysis. She co-wrote the song with her guitarist and partner Chloe Dadd, who also co-produced the song alongside Carlos de la Garza, with recording taking place in Sydney’s Golden Retriever Studios. In a press statement, MAY-A explained that ‘[Redacted]’ was written with a need for catharsis, reflecting on both personal and political turmoil.
“I wanted to take a moment and channel everything that’s been frustrating me into something that’s not only a release for me, but for anyone who feels the same,” she said. “There’s a lot going on in the world, and I think it’s important to laugh at the absurdity of it all — and to try and take action in the process.” MAY-A has also shared an accompanying music video, which she directed herself.
MAY-A – ‘[Redacted]’
Following the release of Analysis Paralysis, MAY-A relocated to Los Angeles and began work on her debut studio album – which is expected to include ‘[Redacted]’. She was selected to open for Glass Animals on their Australian tour last year, and has since made festival appearances at Stonefest and Yours & Owls. In April, she joined Cyndi Lauper on stage to duet on ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’.
Back in January, the singer explained her partial withdrawal from public life in an Instagram post. “I got dropped by my record label, left my manager, lost a lot of friends, spent way to much money on lawyers, was very isolated and felt the heaviness of everything going on in the world,” she wrote.
“I felt the worst I’d felt in a very long time. I deleted social media, and tried to slow down. I started looking towards my favourite authors, working on myself and strengthening my close relationships. I put trust in my new managers, [and] met some wonderful people. I put my absolute everything into these songs and I finally, after a long 17 months, feel like I’ve come out the other side of the heavy stuff. I can tell you to be expecting an album of my blood, sweat and tears in 2025.”
