Melbourne’s Raw Gallery is currently holding an exhibition featuring famous photos of some of rock’s best-loved icons.
The exhibition is titled Generation X: The Soundtrack For Generation Whatever, and as the name suggests is devoted to the alternative rock scene of the late eighties and early nineties, when grunge, hip hop, punk and general slacker culture ruled the roost.
Arguably the most well-known of the photos on display is Mary Carr’s shot of a microphone-wielding Jeff Buckley, the photo that ended up as the cover to his 1994 album Grace. Also on view is a picture of a young Foo Fighters performing a low-key show in London, and ensuring Australia’s rock royalty are not neglected, a few of Silverchair from when they crashed on to the scene as teenagers in the mid-nineties.
Other photos are of Green Day, Iggy Pop, Bjork, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, The Strokes, Oasis, The Beastie Boys, The Prodigy and Trent Reznor. Australia are further represented by Something For Kate, Beasts Of Bourbon and Adalita of Magic Dirt.
