Update: The winner of the Hottest 100 of 2017 has been announced
Happy Triple J Hottest 100 Day, kids! In the immortal words of Mr. Jon Bon Jovi:
We’ve already reached the halfway point in the countdown of the most fire songs of 2017, which means we’re getting down to the business end.
So let’s take a minute to pause and reflect on all the juicy stats, milestones and surprises of the Hottest 100’s bottom 50.
The Jungle Giants have already charted 3 times with ‘On Your Way Down’ at #50, ‘Bad Dream’ at #57 and ‘Used To Be In Love’ at #59, while Dune Rats have scored a double with ‘6 Pack’ at #55 and ‘Braindead’ at #75.
We already know that there will be 65 Australian songs, and 30 out of the bottom 50 are homegrown, which means 35 of the top 50 songs will be Made In Oz #yew
As far as international artists go, Khalid has appeared twice with his own track ‘Saved’ at #62 and featuring on Logic’s ‘1-800-273-8255’ at #82
After being declared officially eligible for Hottest 100 contention, Aussies have voted grimelord Big Shaq to the #51 spot on the list, just outside the top 50, with his joke banger ‘Man’s Not Hot’ #quickmaths
Experts who’ve been tracking the public’s votes are predicting (WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS) that Kendrick Lamar’s hit single ‘HUMBLE.’ will top this year’s countdown, while the likes of Gang Of Youths, Lorde and Methyl Ethel are also likely to secure spots in the top 10.
None of those tracks have featured in the list so far, which means they could very well be on the money, although Kung Fu Kenny has had two tracks from his DAMN. LP chart so far — ‘LOVE. (Feat. ZACARI)’ at #92 and ‘LOYALTY. (Feat. RIHANNA)’ at #97.
Speaking of Ri-Ri, though triple J airplay has tended to elude her own tracks, she’s graced this year’s countdown twice already as a feature artist on both Kendrick’s ‘LOYALTY.’ and on ‘Lemon’ at #66 with N.E.R.D.
Meanwhile, Lorde — who’s tipped to crack the Top 10 with ‘Greenlight’ — has charted twice with ‘Perfect Places’ at #71 and ‘Liability’ at #81.
Also, artists from the heavier genres have yet to receive much love at all. The heaviest song to feature in the countdown so far is arguably Nothing But Thieves‘ ‘Amsterdam’ which — despite being tipped to chart as highly as #22 — entered the list down at #70.
Ocean Grove had better chart in the top 50 or we’re gonna start flipping tables. Just sayin’.
It comes after the J’s revealed that a record number of votes were lodged in the countdown this year.
