Miss Kaninna Returns With New Single ‘Push Up’

Miss Kaninna has shared a new single, ‘Push Up’. It marks her third single overall, following the release of Music Feeds‘ number-one song of 2023 ‘Blak Britney’ and last October’s ‘Pinnacle Bitch’. Unlike her two preceding singles, however, ‘Push Up’ does not showcase Miss Kaninna’s rapping – rather, it is an rnb song in which she sings in a soul and neo-funk style.

In a press statement, the artist – who is of Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali descent – described ‘Push Up’ as “Black pop”. She uses Black away from the common Indigenous Australian spelling of “Blak”, in an attempt to “collectively refer to Black & Indigenous people globally, rather than setting Aboriginal people apart and diluting their Blackness.”

“‘Push Up’ is a really good introduction to the range and the diversity in my music,” she said. “I’ve always been a singer, but some people don’t know that I make that kind of music. You’re getting to know me more, coming and stepping closer to me. It’s about being really fluid, not worrying about labels or genders or anything like that. Love is free and we love who we want – being ourselves 100% is so important.”

Miss Kaninna made the song with producer Jacob Faith, which she described as being “an incredible experience”. “As two Black artists, we wanted to deliver music that has the potential to stand up against international acts,” she said. “[It’s] music that feels good, music for our communities and music we want to listen to.”

This month will see the rapper and singer perform at Sydney’s City Recital Hall as part of the Heaps Gay Queen’s City Ball, as well as on the line-up for this year’s Spin-Off Festival alongside girl in red, DJ Seinfeld, The Last Dinner Party and Baby Gravy. In September, she will support Hiatus Kaiyote on their Love Heart Cheat Code national tour.
