Music World Reacts To Bin Laden Death

The news of the death of Osama Bin Laden has reverberated around the music world in a kind of microcosm echoing the wider emotion/suspicion/incredulity (delete according to ideological bent) caused by the announcement on Monday, May 2.

Unsurprisingly, many prominent figures in pop and rock have taken to Twitter to make their thoughts known, as neatly summed up by Spinner. Public Enemy‘s Chuck D came up with arguably the most inflammatory post, saying, “USA is at it again , number one in the rankings of Killing Championships. Stealing the Gold in the Murder Olympics, and the crowd goes wild!”

Others were more welcoming of the news, such as Damon Abraham of Toronto punks Fucked Up, who tweeted, “Good news everyone, Osama Bin Laden the terrorist is dead. The bad news however is that Osama Bin Laden the martyr has been born.”

His sentiments were echoed by Green Day‘s Billie Jo Armstrong, who wrote, “Do not turn the man into a martyr..” and “This is a global victory.”

A more ebullient response came from Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, who with typical gusto went with, “Ding Dong the witch is dead!! Which ole witch?? The wicked witch!!! Ding Dong the wicked witch is DEAD!!!”

Former Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer tweeted the more reflective, “A moment in the kitchen; remembering those who died on Sept. 11 & not taking any joy in the news”, while one of the most succinct reactions to the grizzly news came from Moby, who led with a mere, “whoa”.
