MusicNSW Announces Free Workshop: Music Publicity 101

The latest installment of MusicNSW’s free workshops is set to focus on the uber hot topic of music industry publicity. The 101 course titled Why Your Press Release Sucks! will unravel the mysteries of this particular sphere of the biz and will provide you with the hard-won expertise of a panel of 5 leading industry figures.

The workshop will cover a wide range of topics concerned with music PR including band bios, the super tricky art of press releases (or, as we call them, “pressers” – there you go, you’re already learning) and, of course, strategic publicity campaigns. The workshop will delve deep into the inner works of a publicist, figuring out what makes them tick, what makes a good rep and why it is essential to have a PR plan for your next tour/release.

Speaking on the day will be Two Fish Out Of Water’s Stacey Piggot (who has also had a book, Blow Your Own Trumpet, published on the subject), the lovely Natalie Dodds of label Create/Control and Secret Service PR (who handles the publicity for the likes of Gotye and Laneway Festival), Claire Collins from Bossy will be speaking, as well as Hey You in the Black T-Shirt author and former drummer for The Saints Iain Sheddan, and, from the AU Review, Larry Heath. The evening will be capped off with a live performance from indie folk pop duo Laura & Bruno, still on a high from the release of their debut EP.

If you’re in the music PR industry and still wondering if this is worth your while, why so hesitant? Your press releases surely can’t get any worse as a result, so register while you still can!
