Inside of Neil Finn there is an avant garde weirdo trying to get out. The left-field aspects of the Kiwi’s singular talent have come out in dribs and drabs over the years (solo albums, film soundtracks, the odd Crowded House song), proving that he can shun the mainstream when the moment takes him. Now, he has taken the step to release the album from his new project, Pajama Club, on his own imprint after years with major labels such as EMI and Universal.
Pajama Club – the band he has put together with his wife Sharon, Sean Donnelly and The Grates‘ Alana Skyring – release their self-titled debut record on September 9, through the Finns’ own label, Lester Records, presumably named after the family’s old pet dog (the Crowded House song in tribute to the deceased mutt can be heard below).
The band’s first single, Tell Me What You Want, is out next week, while the band are currently in the UK playing shows at a few small venues before heading to the US in August. Pajama Club played a successful run of shows in Australia and New Zealand in June – complete with Neil behind the drum kit for Tell Me What You Want.
