Nigerian Singer-Songwriter And Actress Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. The iconic artist reportedly died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.

Onwenu was said to have collapsed after her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island, where she was later confirmed dead, according to The Guardian Newspaper. Her family has yet to officially confirm the news.

Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s. She released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981 and went on to produce numerous albums and singles, including the popular hit “One Love.” Her contributions to the music industry have earned her recognition as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.

Onwenu was not only a celebrated musician but also a talented actress. She appeared in several Nollywood films and received numerous awards for her work in both music and film. Her versatile talent and dedication to the arts made her a beloved figure in Nigerian entertainment.

Beyond her entertainment career, Onwenu was active in politics. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. She later served as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.

Her contributions to Nigerian society extended beyond the arts. In 2011, Onwenu was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and was recognized as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.

The news of Onyeka Onwenu’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian music and film. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
