Parvyn – ‘Free To Be Myself’
Free To Be Myself is a joyful anthem of self-expression, blending Parvyn’s South Asian heritage with disco and soul influences. The track was recorded live at Afterlife Studio with a Canadian band, featuring trumpet solos from Chris Davis (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings) and bass by Erik P. H. Nielsen (City and Colour). Produced by an all-female team, Mary Jane HIFI (Mary Ancheta and Jane Aurora), the song is a vibrant celebration of identity and self-acceptance, complete with catchy melodies, gospel choir harmonies, and a mix of traditional and modern instrumentation.
In Parvyn’s own words: “I want this song to represent the joy you can find in living an authentic life but also give hope that all people can live freely and safely in this world.”
The accompanying music video, directed by award-winning South Australian filmmaker Alice Yang, is a colorful and dynamic visual experience. Set in a thrift shop—a nod to Parvyn’s commitment to sustainable living—the video highlights the importance of community and self-expression. With psychedelic interstellar scenes, diverse dance styles, and vibrant costumes, the video is a bold celebration of diversity and self-love.
Parvyn is best known for her work with the Bollywood-inspired psychedelic rock band The Bombay Royale. She has toured globally since childhood, performing with her father, Dya Singh. Her solo work continues to showcase her unique blend of genre-defying pop and classical Indian raga melodies, captivating audiences with her ethereal vocals.
With Free To Be Myself and the upcoming album Maujuda, Parvyn continues to solidify her place as a powerful voice in the world music scene, delivering messages of joy, freedom, and empowerment through her music.
