Whilst some corporations go out of their way to cash in on this year’s 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings with insidious marketing campaigns, that inevitably that go tits up *cough* Woolworths *cough*, it’s great to see the important day of reflection inspiring some actually beautiful, touching material such as Paul Kelly’s new song Letter From A Trench.
Shared on his Facebook today, the new song is a gentle piano ballad sprinkled with military allusions such as a faded marching drum and bugle-like trumpet all surrounding Kelly’s inimitable vocals.
In a comment with the video, Kelly describes his inspiration for the mournful “when I come home to you” lyrical content, which came from, of all places, a picture sent to him by Australian actor Sam Worthington, who recently shot the two-part Foxtel drama Deadline Gallipoli.
