French indie-pop faves Phoenix have returned with their new single ‘Identical’, their first new music since the band’s sixth studio album Ti Amo back in 2017.
The new track features on the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola’s new film On the Rocks, which is out via Apple TV+ in October. Phoenix also composed score for the film, which stars Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans. It’s their fifth collaboration with Coppola – she notably used the band’s song ‘Too Young’ in 2003’s Lost in Translation.
The track arrives alongside a video directed by Coppola’s brother Roman, who has previously collaborated with the band on videos for ‘Funky Squaredance’, ‘Long Distance Call’ and ‘Everything Is Everything’. Both the video and the song itself are dedicated to the late Philippe Zdar of Cassius, who produced several of the band’s albums, including 2009 breakout Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and its follow-up, 2013’s Bankrupt.
