Bookending a tumultuous year that saw indie legends the Pixies lose their iconic bassist Kim Deal, release their first collection of new music in 22 years, find a replacement for Deal, fire her, and then replace her, the band have now unveiled a follow-up to last year’s EP release, titled EP-2.
The band made the announcement via their official website and accompanied the news with a psychedelic music video for the track Blue Eyed Hexe. The digitally-released EP-2 contains four tracks recorded during October 2012 at Rockfield Studios in Wales, UK with producer Gil Norton.
The band also took some time to explain the process and meaning behind the new songs, including Greens and Blues, which frontman Black Francis says was an attempt at making a new Gigantic from the band’s first studio album, 1988’s Surfer Rosa, released as a single later that year.
“Let’s just say that we had done Gigantic as the closer for many years at our reunion shows and it worked really well,” explained Francis, adding, “But I could see that we were going to grow weary of that and I felt like we basically needed a better Gigantic.”
“It was my attempt to come up with another song that would – musically, emotionally and psychologically – sit in the same place that Gigantic has sat. Not that I could ever replace that song… So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that Gigantic occupied.”
