Melbourne’s Press Club have announced the follow-up to 2018’s brilliant Late Teens, sharing the news their second album Wasted Energy is due out August 16th.
They’ve also shared the album’s first single, ‘Thinking About You’. It’s another energetic, full-throated burst of emotional punk rock – the track is reminiscent of the material on Late Teens but everything feels a bit tighter, a bit more dynamic.
Like the album before it, the band have produced Wasted Energy themselves, using a 70’s-era Neve console at Woodstock Studios in Balaclava, Melbourne. And once again, the record was put to tape completely live.
“It was 100% integral to the song that we cut Natalie [Foster’s] vocals live, there was just no way to elicit the same emotional response she has with the lyrics by overdubbing”, says guitarist and primary producer Greg Rietwyk.
According to the band, the songs on Wasted Energy turn away from the introspection of the previous album, examining negative behaviours in the world around us, how we find ways exist in today’s world. ‘Thinking About You’ recounts Foster’s experience with a stalker. “Wasted Energy is broadly about change, and life’s watershed moments that change its course.”
Have a listen to ‘Thinking About You’ below. The band have a couple of Australian dates left – in Melbourne and Adelaide – before they head off to Europe for a big run of overseas dates. Wasted Energy is available for pre-order now.
