The master of heartbreaking, stripped down covers – lest we forget his recent tribute to “that bastard” Dave Grohl – announced his latest project in a series of Instagram posts, sharing photos of Taylor Swift song lyrics and hinting that the album may have a distinct Smiths – vibe.
“Guaranteed saddest version of ‘Welcome to New York’ ever — or your tears back,” he wrote in one post. “Stoked to dig in to these jams. So much going on in those songs. Truly a badass, thru & thru,” he later added.
Fresh from saving an Australian theatre production at the final hour, T-Swizzle caught wind of the news and shared her excitement. “I WILL PASS OUT,” she wrote in response to a tweet about the covers project.
“I’m not gonna be able to sleep tonight or ever again, and I’m going to celebrate today every year as a holiday. I’M CALM,” she added, level-headedly. Adams confirmed the news to Swift, complimenting her “Badass tunes” as well as teasing a clip of his Welcome to New York cover.
Of course it’s far from the first time the recent Splendour attendee has taken on unlikely covers. As well as paying tribute to Foo Fighters with a rendition of Times Like These he’s also succumbed to the jeers of incessant hecklers by covering Bryan Adams’ Summer of ’69.
Still, this might be his most ambitious covers project yet. See the Instagram posts and tweets below, and catch Taylor Swift’s upcoming Australian 1989 tour dates, here.
