Screen Music Awards Nominees For 2014 Announced

APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers have banded together to announce the nominees of this year’s Screen Music Awards. Recognising outstanding talent in the field of film and television music, this year’s nominees have worked behind the scenes on Rake, Wentworth, and more.

There’s a few familiar names among the nominees, including first-time nominee Jack Moffitt, best known for his work as guitarist in Sydney-based rock-soul heroes The Preatures. Moffitt has been nominated in the prized Best Music for a Documentary category for his work on Blood Pulls a Gun.

Jeff Lang picked up a nomination for his theme for The Gods Of Wheat Street. Way Of The Eagle’s Jan Skubiszewski and his dad, Cezary, are up against Lang with their Serangoon Road theme, and picked up another nom for Best Music for a Television Series or Serial on Ep. 6 of the same series. Ex-Custard frontman Dave McCormack, now a seasoned hand at screen composition himself, scored a couple of nods for his work on Rake alongside Antony Partos.

Though you may not be familiar with their names, Partos and Cezary Skubiszewski have had an incredible 12 months. The two composers, who’ve previously worked on scores for Animal Kingdom and Red Dog, respectively, have each earned six nominations this year, across a diverse range of categories.

Other “quiet achievers” who’ve earned recognition this year include David Hirschfelder, who’s picked up nods in the highly coveted Film Score Of The Year category for Healing and The Railway Man, Christopher de Groot for Sororal, and Christopher Gordon for his work on the Naomi Watts-starring Adoration.

“Strike up the band for another wonderful celebration of what is sometimes not noticed, but always felt, the music that accompanies the images that tell our stories. Another quality selection of film and TV nominations with many familiar names and exciting new comers to the limelight. Looking forward to a great night,” said Australian Guild of Screen Composers President Guy Gross of this year’s nominations.

Readers can check below for the full list of this year’s nominees. This year’s awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 12th November at the City Recital Hall in Sydney, and is set to feature nominated compositions performed by an orchestra and directed by Emmy Award-winning composer Ashley Irwin.
