Spacey Jane Announce New Album ‘If That Makes Sense’

Spacey Jane have followed up on their flurry of recent activity with the announcement of their third studio album. If That Makes Sense is set for release on Friday, May 9th via AWAL, and serves as the official follow-up to their chart-topping 2022 album Here Comes Everybody. The Perth band have shared the album’s lead single, ‘All The Noise’, to coincide with the album’s announcement.

In a press statement, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Caleb Harper explained that he began writing the song while in a Sydney hotel room, having touched down in Australia after living over in the US for six months. “I suppose there was something about being down under again that made my version of the story of the beginning of my life feel so vivid,” he said. “It’s angry, but not at someone, and it’s sad because I can’t quite get to the bottom of what or who made me.”

Harper also praised the playing of his bandmates – lead guitarist Ashton Hardman-LeCornu, bassist Peppa Knight and drummer Kieran Lama – on the new single. “It might be my favourite riff of Ashton’s,” he said, “and [it’s] the tightest Peppa and Kieran have ever locked.” An accompanying music video for the track, directed by Dan Lesser, can be viewed below.

Spacey Jane recorded If That Makes Sense across 2024 with Northern Irish producer Mike Crossey, marking their first time working together. The album also saw the band working with outside co-writers for the first time, including Jackson Phillips of Day Wave and Australian pop songwriter Sarah Aarons. In a joint press statement, the band noted that the album “isn’t trying to be anything in particular”.

“Sometimes it is sure of itself, and other times it whispers uncertainty,” they said. “It’s hard to give it a theme other than an overwhelming sense of confusion and a less than successful attempt to tie up emotional loose ends. We went to the U.S., we put our faith in new collaborators and finished making a self-funded record without a label home for it. We stepped off the cliff everyday and loved it, and we have never been happier with our work than we are now.”

As announced yesterday, Spacey Jane will perform at The Lansdowne in Sydney tonight (January 16th), before heading to Melbourne to perform at Howler on Friday night. If That Makes Sense, meanwhile, can be both pre-saved and pre-ordered by clicking here.
