With newspapers going the way of the dodo it’s no surprise to see them start branching out into new markets, with Spectrum Now Festival in the Domain being the Sydney Morning Herald‘s glittering bid at getting young people to read the paper again.
Enlisting the likes of The Jesus & Mary Chain (UK), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Cananda), Birds Of Tokyo, Calexico (USA), Augie March, Seekae, U.S. Girls (USA) Alvvays (Canada) Jonathan Boulet, Rockwiz Live and more, the SMH in conjunction with ANZ and Splendour In The Grass and Falls Festival impresarios Paul Piticco and Jessica Ducrou, are erecting a vintage circus themed performance space in The Domain to host a series of special ticketed and free events across 11 days from Thursday March 3rd to Sunday March 13th.
While the opening night’s entertainment has yet to be announced, Popfrenzy and Yours & Owls will be kicking off the first weekend’s proceedings. Hosting a mini festival within the festival called Divine Times, the event lands on Saturday 5th of March with Jesus & Mary Chain, Seekae, U.S. Girls (USA), Alvvays (CAN), Jonathan Boulet announced and more yet to join.
Calexico are next cabs off the rank, who supported by Augie March will be taking over the 2,500 person capacity big top for their first Australian show on Sunday March 6th.
Following hot on their heels, Godspeed You! Black Emperor will be making a rare Australian appearance, treating local post-rocks fans to their expansive cinematic sound on Tuesday 8th March.
Meanwhile Rockwiz will be taking over Thursday 10th March with Birds Of Tokyo taking some time off from working on new material to treat fans to a glimpse of the new album on Friday the 11th.
With a whole host of smaller local gigs planned for the expansive Big Top grounds, as well as Burlesque performances by Holler & Haul, a tattoo parlour operating by LDF Tattoo legend Les Rice and a pop up barber shop run by Tony Vacher of Sterling Hairdressing Parlour & Barber Shop, Spectrum Now has a lot to offer.
With tickets on sale this Thursday 17th December, full details of the events so far announced are here below.
