Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls is going solo, putting the foil-covered zucchini back in his pants and coming to Australia later this year for his solo world premiere.
Smalls (a fictional character portrayed by Harry Shearer in cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap) will team up with his band The Surviving Members and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to perform his multimedia show ‘Lukewarm Water Live: An Adventure in Loud Music’ at the Sydney Opera House in October, and we’re being promised special guests, new tunes and even some Spinal Tap classics.
“When they told me I was going to perform at Sydney Opera House, I was really chuffed,” Smalls says.
“I was halfway through learning the ‘Habanera’ from Carmen when they told me two things: that was for a soprano, and they want me to play my music. So I’m going to write some. Now I’m really chuffed.”
Smalls and his bandmates Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins released the iconic This Is Spinal Tap back in 1984, and have gone on to release three albums, including 2009’s Back From The Dead.
Smalls is reportedly working on a new solo album called Smalls Change, which is rumoured to feature the likes of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Peter Frampton, Steve Vai and more.
