The Flaming Lips have been busy preparing a plethora of weird and wonderful things for this year’s Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. Music wise, the band will release a cover of The Stone Roses’ 1989 self-titled debut album, which remains an emblem of the ‘Madchester’ sound and aesthetic. The Lips will also put out a collaborative EP with Australia’s own Tame Impala (in which the two bands play covers of each other) as well as a vinyl edition of the Ender’s Game soundtrack.
To compliment your Flaming Lips experience, frontman Wayne Coyne has recently detailed a sort of edible human skull that would act as a perfect accompaniment to some new Lips music. Discussing the skull with Rolling Stone, Coyne said:
“It’s all made out of chocolate, it’s a life-size human skull, a life-sized human brain, and the brain is actually sliding out of the skull made with this brain fluid flavored hard-candy… And there’s a little magic coin inside that brain that you’re supposed to dig out. I think it’s supposed to get you into any Flaming Lips show in the world. I think that’s our intention.”
Coyne has also revealed some details regarding the Stone Roses cover album. The release is set to feature a number of smaller groups that Coyne enjoys, including New Fumes, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Def Rain and Peaking Lights. Poliça will perform She Bangs The Drums, Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado will take on This Is The One and Spaceface will recreate the Roses’ classic Fools Gold.
Record Store Day might also see the release of a toy frog that contains an audio recording of the band’s first demo. At the moment it’s being called the “Fuck You Frog”, and it comes with a seven-inch vinyl sidekick. So, if you see any Lips merchandise around on Record Store Day, grab it. No matter what it is, it’s bound to be perfectly ridiculous.
The Flaming Lips’ 13th studio album, The Terror, was released in April this year. You can now also watch the band’s cover of Tame Impala’s Elephant right here.
