The Kid LAROI Planning Big Project That’ll Explain The Name “LAROI”

Charlton Howard, aka Sydney rapper The Kid LAROI, is planning a big project that’ll go into some detail about his artist name, which references his mum’s Kamilaroi heritage.

The revelation came in a long-form interview with Billboard. LAROI spoke to Billboard’s Josh Glicksman about his prevailing success, which has taken him to the top of the US charts, seen him collaborate with the likes of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus and won praise from Olivia Rodrigo, Ed Sheeran and Elton John.

LAROI indicated his official debut album will be coming out next year and spoke of his desire for people to stop comparing him to other artists.

“I feel like as I keep going, people will start to see me more for me,” he said. “I think that’s already happening. Hopefully with this album, people will really start to separate me as my own person.”

LAROI told Billboard he has a few more projects in the works, too, including one that’ll go into detail about the origins of his artist name, which is derived from his mother’s Indigenous Kamilaroi roots. He kept quiet about the details, however.

LAROI also spoke about his friendship with Justin Bieber and explained why he’s rarely seen not wearing sunglasses. “[They’re a defence against] people trying to figure out what I’m thinking,” he said.

The Kid LAROI will tour Australia in May-June 2022.
