The Whitlams are turning the big 2-5 and to celebrate, they’re joining forces with the best orchestras in the country for a massive new tour.
The iconic Aussie outfit will perform six concert hall dates across the country in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide, with each city’s top symphonic squadron to toast their Silver Jubilee, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and more.
Taking place in April and May of 2017, the tour will see songs from across Tim Freedman & co’s classic songbook enhanced by a 50-piece orchestra, performing beautifully crafted and textured re-workings of the band’s biggest hits, including ya faves like No Aphrodisiac and Blow Up The Pokies.
It’s not The Whitlams’ first symphonic rodeo, either. The orchestral arrangements were commissioned over a decade, dating from the band’s first symphonic collaboration with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra back in 2004, which kicked off countless other successful collabs with our state symphony orchestras over the years (believe it or not, this tour will actually mark the 11th Sydney Opera House Concert Hall show for Sydney Symphony and The Whitlams).
“It is an honour to play with these musicians who in some cases have been playing their instruments since they were in the womb,” says Freedman.
“I particularly look forward to hearing Peter Sculthorpe¹s beautiful string interlude to my song Out the Back for the fist time since he passed away two years ago. It never fails to send audiences into raptures.”
