San Fransisco garage-rock idols Thee Oh Sees have announced an indefinite hiatus after almost fifteen years of prolific music-making. The band aren’t breaking up though, with a new album already lined up for early 2014.
2013 saw the band release the well-received Floating Coffin, as well as Singles Collection Volume Three and a photo book from frontman John Dwyer. At a recent sold-out show in San Fran’s Great American Music Hall, Dwyer told the crowd, “This will be the last Oh Sees show for a long while… so dig in.”
The group then released a more reassuring statement via their website, which reads:
DEAR OH SEES FANS,
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT.
THE BAND IS NOT BREAKING UP.
THIS IS JUST A WELL DESERVED BREAK AND A TRANSITIONAL PERIOD.
A NEW THEE OH SEES LP WILL BE OUT EARLY 2014
AND WE WILL SEE WHERE THE LIVE SHOW GOES FROM THERE…
UNTIL THEN, BE WELL
JPD
The band’s booking agent Annie Southworth has spoken with SF Weekly, saying that: “They need a break after 5 years straight… Will be a little hard to continue with all the different locales so who know [sic] what is going to happen… Cross fingers, we all are that it’s not completely over.”
Southworth notes that no future plans will be made until Dwyer finishes moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Bass guitarist Petey Dammit and drummer Mike Shoun are staying in San Fran, but keyboardist/vocalist Brigid Dawson is also leaving town for Santa Cruz.
