TOWNS Share First New Song In Two Years, ‘Birthdays’

TOWNS have shared a new single entitled ‘Birthdays’, marking their first release of 2024. It is the band’s first music as lead artist since the release of their second EP, 2022’s things you might feel sometimes. ‘Birthdays’ has been released ahead of the Adelaide duo’s national tour with Between You & Me, which is set to take place next month.

The band recorded ‘Birthdays’ with producer Tim Maxwell, best known as the frontman of Melbourne alternative rock band Loser. They also worked with Press Club guitarist Greg Rietwyk, who engineered the song.

In a press statement, lead vocalist and guitarist Ashton Valladares described ‘Birthdays’ as “a new way to make fun of us spending so much time worrying about growing up.” “I’m guilty of being fearful of where I sit generationally,” he says. “It’s nice to remind myself that life really is stupidly short, and you’re only as old as you feel.”

An accompanying music video for ‘Birthdays’ has also been shared, which was co-directed by Luke Fran with the band members themselves. The lo-fi video pays homage to MTV programming in the 1990s as well as Jackass. “[We wanted] to show that even when you look 80, you can still do dumb stuff and have a good time with your friends,” says Valladares.

TOWNS – ‘Birthdays’

2023 saw TOWNS tour nationally in support of Kisschasy, alongside Bec Stevens. The band also released a collaborative single with Melbourne duo Sick Visor, entitled ‘Feeling Alright Forever’, and performed at Yours & Owls festival in Wollongong that October. After an extended break, the band returned to the live arena earlier this year with a support slot for American pop-punk bands Hot Mulligan and Free Throw.
