While some would argue that they are two sides of the same coin, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has accused Kanye West of “blatantly” ripping off the band’s stage production.
Reznor, who previously ripped West’s latest album ye to shreds, sat down with BBC Music and told them that he believes both Kanye and The Weeknd completely ripped off Nine Inch Nails’ production.
“I saw Kanye West blatantly rip off–and the Weeknd rip off– our tours production-wise, which I’ll say without any hesitation,” Reznor said. “And they know.”
It’s not the first time in recent weeks that Reznor has gone in on an artist, having recently condemned Taylor Swift for not speaking out against Trump.
Reznor harks back to the band’s early use of “screens and experimental production techniques” during their live shows, and says that’s most of what he saw at this year’s Coachella.
“I remember us watching a string of bands on Coachella from the comfort of our couch,” he said. “And every band has a video playing behind them. And every band is synced up with a convenient, polite lighting package, you know?”
Pitchfork points out that NIN and Kanye have indeed shared a production designer in the past, Martin Phillips, who is also behind Daft Punk’s iconic pyramid.
