Trent Reznor On Nixing Soundwave: “I Think Your Bill Sucked”

The lineup for Soundwave 2014 has only been partially revealed to the public and so far has presented a fairly compelling case to purchase tickets, though Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor is certainly not feeling any remorse having turned down an offer to play at the event.

Speaking with News.com.au, Reznor expanded on a recent back and forth between himself and Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah where Reznor was accused of attempting to appeal to a more mainstream demographic or, as Maddah put it, Justin Timberlake’s fans.

At the time, Reznor commented that he didn’t feel “Soundwave was the right vibe for us or our fans”, promising Nine Inch Nails would be making other arrangements, which they later did in the form of a co-headlining tour with Queens Of The Stone Age.

Now, Reznor has cleared things up, explaining that his comments were a polite way of turning down a festival he’d rather not play, thinking it would not go down well with fans of Nine Inch Nails:

“I’m trying to make the best music I can, hoping that it is expansive and challenging. That got misconstrued into I’m trying to be – what was it? ‘Justin Timberlake’? A better way of saying it is, ‘I think your bill sucked and I’d rather not be on that bill.’ That’s a much more truthful way of saying it.”

He added:

“To address the Soundwave thing, I think about is, as a fan, would I want to go see Nine Inch Nails on that bill? I wouldn’t go see Nine Inch Nails on that bill. But I’d be excited to see ’em with Queens.”

This wasn’t always the case, as in 2009 NIN headlined the festival with a strong line up that included the likes of Alice in Chains and The Dillinger Escape Plan. So it seems the 2014 lineup just didn’t cut it for old T. Rez.
