Fans of UK indie band Viola Beach have started a campaign to get the band’s first single Swings and Waterslides to the top of the UK charts, following the news yesterday of their death in a tragic auto accident in Sweden.
Their car bursting through a barrier and plunging 25 meters off a canal bridge, Kris Leonard, 19, River Reeves, 19, Tomas Lowe, 27, Jack Dakin, 24, and manager Craig Tarry, 32, all died in the crash. Reports describe the car as travelling at high speed when they approached the bridge that was not fully shut after opening to let a boat pass through
Family members and friends have confirmed their deaths, writing touching tributes to the young musicians on social media, saying they were “living the dream”. Fans on the other hand have chosen to remember the band by starting the #ViolaBeach4number1 hashtag, urging people to buy their single Swings and Waterslides.
Sitting at number 2 on the UK iTunes chart as of this morning, the band Facebook likes have tripled overnight, now totalling more than 24,000.
The band’s label Communion also announced on Sunday that all proceeds from the sales of the single would be donated to the families of the band and Mr Tarry.
