Watch Chris Rock Skewer Jay Z & Solange At The BET Awards

American comedian Chris Rock has used his opening monologue at the 2014 BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards to give his explanation of the infamous elevator fight in which Beyoncé‘s sister Solange hit out at the singer’s husband, rapper Jay Z.

After describing the BET Awards as “the black World Cup”, Rock proceeded to discuss the year in black music. “What happened to music this year?” he asked. “Well, Solange had a fight with Jay Z in an elevator. That’s what happened this year, okay?

“You know what? Solange hit the right rapper. She did,” Rock continued. “Everyone’s saying ‘I can’t believe Jay Z didn’t smack her’. Well, Jay’s a business man now – he can’t just go punching girls in the face. He got a meeting with Nabisco in the morning.”

Rock then cleverly mapped Jay Z’s behaviour against his timeline of album releases. “[Solange] hit Blueprint 3 Jay Z. Cause if she hit Reasonable Doubt Jay Z, that elevator would’ve been filled up with nothing but lipstick, blood and weed. That’s music baby.”

Rock also discussed Apple’s recent acquisition of Beats Electronics, the audio product company partly fronted by Dr Dre which sold for over USD$3 billion. “What else happened in music this year? Dr Dre got $3 billion. The man that made The Chronic got $3 billion. The man that started NWA got $3 billion,” Rock said.

Rock finished off his black music rant with a cheap shot at rapper Rick Ross. “Dre got Beats, Rick Ross got diabeats,” Rock said. “They’re the headphones you put on swollen feet before you chop em’ off.

“I love Rick Ross, Rick Ross is my favourite rapper,” Rock then reassured the crowd.

The BET Award ceremony is still taking place at time of publication, but some awards have already been handed out. Pharrell Williams has won Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Drake has been named Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, whilst Tamela Mann has taken out Best Gospel Artist and August Alsina has been named Best New Artist.
