The Holy Shits, more commonly known as the Foo Fighters, crammed 600 fans into Concorde 2 in Brighton, England on 10th September as the band continue their run of surprise gigs in the UK under their recently revived alter-ego.
As reported by NME, the intimate gig saw the Foos transform hits like Learn To Fly, from pop rock to thrash metal, and fill out single The Pretender with a ‘jazzy’ solo from bandmate Pat Smear. Leading into Learn To Fly, frontman Dave Grohl told the sold-out crowd thing were going to be different.
“We’ll try to play every song a little bit different then we usually would, just to make it interesting for you,” explained Grohl.
Grohl also took the breakdown to explain the formula of The Foos success.
“You speed it up as fast as you can, then you realise it’s hot as fuck in here and you break it down and say something funny until you don’t want to throw up anymore. There, you have the Foo Fighters. Okay, the nausea has passed.”
The band also played a bunch of deep cuts for the first time in years including Enough Space, New Way Home, and See You. Before Up in Arms, another seldom song performed live, Grohl remarked, ““[It’s] a love song – we don’t play it enough because when we play it at festivals the line for the toilets get really long. I don’t think anyone’s going anywhere tonight though, if you have to go do it on the person in front of you.”
Not the only Foos in the building The UK Foo Fighters, a tribute band, were also in attendance. Grohl’s UK counterpart joined the band for track White Limo and before playing Big Me the Foos jokingly admitted to feeling the pressure playing before their understudies.
“We don’t wanna shit the bed in front of the UK Foo Fighters. They’ll be like ‘that’s not how it goes’,” joked Grohl.
