Haim recently visited the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge to perform their single ‘Summer Girl’.
While they were there, they also took the time to provide their rendition of ‘Panini’, the latest single from the internet’s favourite rapper, Lil Nas X.
Upon its release, journalists noted that ‘Panini’ interpolates a melody from the classic Nirvana song ‘In Bloom’. The rapper claimed he’d never actually heard the Nirvana track, telling Apple Music’s Beats 1 “One of the craziest things about ‘Panini’ is it introduced me to Nirvana’s album Nevermind.
“It’s like I always seen the cover but I never actually listened to it. And people was like, ‘Wow, he sampled ‘Nirvana.” I was like, no. It’s like, I didn’t realize I was using almost the exact same melody.”
Anyway, Haim have taken the whole thing and run with it, mashing up ‘Panini’ with ‘In Bloom’ for their live cover. The song transitions from electronic drums and glossy synths at around the minute and a half mark, into grungy guitars and Cobain-esque vocals courtesy of Danielle Haim.
