Montaigne has gone straight to the top of Aussie pop, covering Sia‘s monster single Chandelier for triple j’s Like A Version. It’d be a tall order for most anyone to match Sia’s soaring vocals on the original, so the Sydney indie pop artist brings Chandelier back to its basics.
Beginning with only a plucked acoustic guitar and her voice, Montaigne, real name Jessica Cerro, keeps things grounded while giving Chandelier a more contemplative tone. Her backing band soon comes in with gentle keys and measured drum rolls where Montaigne’s breathy delivery is right at home.
But Chandelier is a song that needs to be unleashed and Montaigne gets to show off her powerful pipes, reaching an impressively high register while rising above the music. Montaigne also delivered a sweet acoustic, cello-assisted version of her emotive single I Am Not An End.
