The Flaming Lips have today come good on their word to release covers of Tame Impala songs to promote the bands’ joint US tour, with the Flips flipping Tame’s 2012 uber hit Elephant and releasing a video to prove it.
The new rendition of the triple j Hottest 100 top 10 entry is even more fuzzed out than the original, if that’s possible, with the distortion cranked on the drums, guitars and vocals. Come ripping solo time, though, we’re hit with a typical Flaming Lips left turn as the epic 2 minute noodle is reduced to a clean and simple riff. Cheeky.
Some weeks back Flaming Lips revealed they will be taking the band-bond even further by releasing a full 4-tracker vinyl EP containing various covers of singles from both bands. Wayne Coyne took to his controversial Instagram account to announce, “…doing a Tame Impala does Flaming Lips songs and Flaming Lips do Tame Impala songs 4-song vinyl!! Only available at the shows !!!”
As well as the below track we can get excited for a Flaming Lips cover of Runway, Houses, City, Clouds off Tame’s stunning debut, with Tame doing their best Are You a Hypnotist? and Silver Trembling Hands. The below video might be the only chance you get to experience these tracks without dropping 80 bucks on eBay. Or waiting for someone to upload the rest of them to YouTube. Enjoy!
