White Night have just released the programs for their Melbourne and Ballarat 2017 events where the cities’ CBD’s streets, laneways and gardens will be lit up and buzzing with magic. Melbourne’s February event will be closely followed by the inaugural White Night Ballarat event held in March.
For just 12 magical hours of twilight (from 7pm-7am) local, national and international artists will put on various performances and installations throughout the night and the wee hours of the morning. They will range from music to art, theatre, dance, and will offer a truly immersive creative and cultural experience.
Included on the extensive bill will be the fire erupting, rhythm pounding, multi-octave Pyrophone Juggernaut, which is the largest hand-operated, multi-octave, fire organ in the world. This beast erupts with music – its rhythms powered by jets of flame.
The La Trobe Reading Room at the State Library will be transformed into a 360 degree underwater Seadragon’s Lair, complete with animation, soundscapes and underwater cinematography. There will be the return of the 12-hour dance marathon by Swing City on Collins St (think 30’s 40’s and 50’s big band music) so your fanciest dancing shoes are a must.
Alex Sanson’s huge kinetic flower sculpture, Spherophyte, will unfurl right before your very eyes with 48 illuminated moving arms. It is mesmerising to watch as it ‘breaths’, folding and unfolding in an endless cycle.
Also featured at the event will be an interactive art piece put on by French artist Pierre Ardouvin who interprets the work of Prince in an unforgettable sensory experience. Dubbed Purple Rain, this is a visual and sound installation that involves holding a transparent umbrella while you wander through an actual lilac-coloured shower.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren said, “White Night is all about showcasing Victoria’s renowned arts, culture, entertainment and cutting edge technology. In 2017 Melbourne will light up once more as visitors from right around the world are treated to a party like no other, and for the first time Ballarat will have its CBD illuminated like never before. There’s simply no place like Victoria for this stunning event.”
