Ali Barter Announces Debut Album, Unveils New Single ‘Cigarette’

Melbourne singer-songwriter Ali Barter has just debuted a brand new track ‘Cigarette’ and announced her debut album titled A Suitable Girl.

Barter, whose 2016 single ‘Girlie Bits’ saw her gain a cult following and secure #58 in the Hottest 100, revealed to triple j that the album will be released in March. A Suitable Girl will include ‘Girlie Bits’ and new single ‘Cigarette’, as well as nine brand new tracks.

The record, which was produced and co-written by by Holy Holy‘s Oscar Dawson, was written like an imaginary movie soundtrack where each song is a different scene. Barter said that she wanted the new record to be a filter-less account of her experiences.

“I just wanted to be really honest about my feelings,” said Barter. I’ve done three EPs and I found the more that I did – produced things, explained things, covered things in metaphor – I didn’t feel I was saying things that are true to me. So with this album… I wanted it to be really natural and authentic.”

She also revealed that Bertie Blackman worked on the album, as did American songwriters Sydney Wayser and Harlan Silverman.

You can catch Ali Barter at Australia’s queer music festival Gaytimes which runs from the 17th-19th February in Marysville, Victoria.

A Suitable Girl is set to be released on Friday, 24th March.
